However, he was not only a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, but was also an activist committed to human rights, racial equity, prison reform, and ending the death penalty. This anthology includes frank reflections from an award-winning array of contemporary North Carolina writers. Their essays about Green's work and relationships are meant to launch new conversations about a man who was seen as progressive, even radical, in his time. Margaret D. Bauer is the Rives Chair of Southern Literature in the Department of English at East Carolina University, a Distinguished Professor of Harriot College of Arts and Science, and the editor of the North Carolina Literary Review. She is the recipient of the North Carolina Award for Literature, and the John Tyler Caldwell Award for the Humanities.
