He became friends with the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, whose own 'Idylls of the King' inspired Sir James to put this collection of stories together. Sir James later designed a house for Lord Tennyson as well as churches in Clapham in south London and the garden in Leicester Square. He co-founded the Metaphysical Society with Lord Tennyson in 1860, the members of which included many notable figures of Victorian society.
