Megan Viets, a mystery writer, witnesses a real murder in a resort town in the San Bernardino Mountains, where she lives with her disabled husband and small son. When the sheriff, Megan's handsome brother-in-law, allows her to inspect the victim's clothes, she recognizes the labels as belonging to a famous London tailor. Although it is against department policy, she obtains permission to take a sports coat and slacks to London, and the tailor remembers making the clothes for a customer in New York by the name of Aldo Bandini. On her way back to California, Megan stops in New York and learns that Aldo Bandini, is a lawyer for the mob. Meanwhile Megan's husband falls ill and is not expected to live. Megan continues to work with the local sheriff, and the two develop a stormy relationship. The FBI has to be called in and Megan becomes embroiled in some dangerous situations. She is ultimately able to help capture a fugitive on the FBI's most-wanted list and ultimately solves the mystery.
