The story is set in the middle of twentieth-century Eastern Europe, at the time of the persecution of the Jewish people, followed by the communist regimes. Together with her family, she escaped from Romania by way of Israel and Cuba to land in Canada. She studied at Cornell University where she met her future husband, a South African Fulbright scholar.
He promised her that South Africa would change and in no small way, he contributed to that change.
It is a story that is attached to the millennia-long story of the Jewish people. It is a story of resilience, of taking risks, and of courage to move to uncertain futures and strange lands.
